Sounds simple, right? In this age of higher and higher ISO and cameras that can shoot in the dark I think it’s easy to forget that. My Nikon D3S can shoot in relative darkness with ease and make beautiful files. The Olympus PEN E-P3, not so much. The Oly makes a decent image in lowlight, [...]

I’ve had my eye on the Micro 4/3 cameras for a while now. When Olympus released the E-P1 a few years ago it was hard to resist to cool retro styling and the promise of “DSLR quality” in a small package. All of the reviews complained about the SLOW auto focus and the less than [...]

Atlanta area photographers can find lots of great classes at the Showcase School of Photography. The school offers photography classes for beginners and advanced photographers. If you are just getting into the world of photography, there are classes like Digital 101 and Digital 102. If you are ready for the next step you might consider [...]

I am available Mondays and Tuesdays for private classes in basic camera skills, advanced photography techniques, HDR shooting and processing and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. No matter what your skill level, I am confident that I can improve your image making. I can come to your home or office in the Atlanta area to teach the [...]

Photo by Eric Thomson I recently hosted some local photographers for a visit to Atlanta’s Dragon-Con Science-Fiction and Fantasy convention. Besides vendors and celebrity guests, DragonCon is home to hundreds of attendees in elaborate, often homemade costumes. It was a great opportunity for the photographers in the group to shoot some out-of-this-world people and practice [...]

Rick Sammon and I just wrapped up the first Digital Photo Experience Weekend in Atlanta. The 20+ attendees were treated to Rick’s presentation of photo and HDR tips Saturday morning, and (hopefully) enthralled by my Lightroom presentation on Saturday afternoon We had beautiful models and great locations on Sunday as we modified light using reflectors, diffusers [...]

If you regularly travel with expensive camera gear, the Lock It Up cable lock from Think Tank Photo may be the best $25 you can spend. It is one of those items that works so well and so easily that you’re left wondering, “why didn’t I think of that?”

Rick Sammon and I are leading a photo workshop in Atlanta, GA this August 13-15. Here’s a quick video with the details…

I wanted to take a second and mention the companies that support our workshops. When I was looking for sponsors for the Arenal Eco Adventure photo workshop in Costa Rica, it was important to me to work with people and products that I am proud to recommend and represent.

I spent last week in Orlando, FL for the Photoshop World conference at the Orange County Convention Center. This was my fourth Photoshop World and they just keep getting better. The only difficult thing about attending Photoshop World is deciding which classes to take. I tend to focus on Lightroom and photography classes, and this time was no exception.

I have an old Samsonite roll-aboard suitcase that I put a padded divider set in to hold camera gear. The wheels are terrible, the handle is rickety and it tips over when it’s loaded. I was preparing to lead a workshop in Costa Rica recently and I figured it was time for a new rolling camera bag.
My experience with Think Tank Photo products made their rolling bags my first choice.

For Christmas my wife surprised me with a Think Tank backpack. It’s the Streetwalker Hard Drive model. For a long time I’ve wanted a backpack that would hold my gear and my laptop. I always hated having one carry on for my gear and another carry on for my computer. Now I can cram all that in to one bag.

I wanted to do a post to address the Lightroom info that people are searching for lately. There are a few questions that seem to come up regularly. Here are a few of those questions, and some things I’ve helped my friends with lately. This is a simple thing, but it had a friend of [...]

It’s funny how much energy photographers have expended debating this topic. I will admit that when I see someone holding their SLR camera like this… I assume that person is a novice. Mainly because most “pro” photographers have figured out how to hold their camera for maximum sharpness. I’ve read articles that mention HOW to [...]

I had planned to write this post today BEFORE I read Scott Kelby’s post this morning about collections in Lightroom. It was interesting to read his post because we pretty much end up at the same place, but we take a different route to get there… As you know from my previous post, I import [...]

I’m going to start this week with a quick tip that I just learned. Say you’re working with a brush to lighten part of your image, and you have painted over a section with your density at 100. Now say you decide that you would rather not have that section quite so light, but the [...]

I wanted to begin this post with a word about the “flow” and “density” sliders inside the Adjustment Brush panel. These are very important for controlling how your adjustments are applied, but they are fairly simple to figure out. Think of the density slider as the maximum that the effect can be applied. For example, [...]

I get a lot of questions about my Think Tank Photo Rotation 360º backpack from other photographers. “Is that that crazy backpack that spins around?”, “does that thing really work?”, etc. I also read a “review” recently of the “new” Rotation 360º backpack that was written by someone who apparently used the pack once and [...]

I don’t think I’m the only one that is always in search of the perfect camera bag. I would be embarrassed to tell you how many camera bags I have acquired over the last ten years. The problem is that a bag that is perfect for one situation might be totally annoying and difficult to use in another. I thought I had found the perfect bag last year when I got a Rotation 360 backpack from Think Tank Photo… In the context of a busy city, the Rotation 360 seemed like overkill for size and capacity. The hunt for a “city bag” began…
